Effect of magnetic field on electron transport in HgTe/CdTe quantum wells: numerical analysis
The effect of magnetic field on electron transport in the inverted band structure of HgTe/CdTe quantum well is investigated. Although magnetic field breaks the time-reversal symmetry, the quantum spin Hall effect can still survive at large magnetic field up to 10 T. Moreover, two quantum anomalous Hall-like phases emerge, in which the system only has a spin-up or spin-down edge state at a given sample edge and the edge current is spin polarized. By tuning the Fermi energy, the system can transit between the quantum spin Hall phase and two quantum anomalous Hall-like phases, so the polarized direction of the edge current is well controllable. Thus the spin selectivity can be realized for potential applications of spintronics. Due to the quantum spin and anomalous Hall-like effects, the longitudinal and Hall resistances exhibit quantum plateaus. In addition, at certain magnetic field, some exotic plateaus like 23 fractional quantum Hall effect are also observed, where edge states with the same spin counterpropagate at the one edge. At last, these plateaus are hardly affected by Rashba spin-orbit interaction, Zeeman effect, and Anderson disorder. © 2012 American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio
Serum and Liver Iron Differently Regulate the Bone Morphogenetic Protein 6 (BMP6)-SMAD Signaling Pathway in Mice
The bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP6)-SMAD signaling pathway is a central regulator of hepcidin expression and systemic iron balance. However, the molecular mechanisms by which iron is sensed to regulate BMP6-SMAD signaling and hepcidin expression are unknown. Here we examined the effects of circulating and tissue iron on Bmp6-Smad pathway activation and hepcidin expression in vivo after acute and chronic enteral iron administration in mice. We demonstrated that both transferrin saturation and liver iron content independently influence hepcidin expression. Although liver iron content is independently positively correlated with hepatic Bmp6 messenger RNA (mRNA) expression and overall activation of the Smad1/5/8 signaling pathway, transferrin saturation activates the downstream Smad1/5/8 signaling cascade, but does not induce Bmp6 mRNA expression in the liver. Hepatic inhibitory Smad7 mRNA expression is increased by both acute and chronic iron administration and mirrors overall activation of the Smad1/5/8 signaling cascade. In contrast to the Smad pathway, the extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 and 2 (Erk1/2) mitogen-activated protein kinase (Mapk) signaling pathway in the liver is not activated by acute or chronic iron administration in mice. Conclusion: Our data demonstrate that the hepatic Bmp6-Smad signaling pathway is differentially activated by circulating and tissue iron to induce hepcidin expression, whereas the hepatic Erk1/2 signaling pathway is not activated by iron in vivo
Technology Development Through Pooling ARV Drug Patents: A Vision from China
Unaffordable prices still bar the end-users in China from accessing ARV drugs. Patent protection of ARV drugs has dramatically limited the availability of these lifesaving drugs to AIDS patients in China
First Measurements of eta_c Decaying into K^+K^-2(pi^+pi^-) and 3(pi^+pi^-)
The decays of eta_c to K^+K^-2(pi^+pi^-) and 3(pi^+pi^-) are observed for the
first time using a sample of 5.8X10^7 J/\psi events collected by the BESII
detector. The product branching fractions are determined to be B(J/\psi-->gamma
eta_c)*B(eta_c-->K^+K^-pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)=(1.21+-0.32+-
0.23)X10^{-4}, and (J/\psi-->gamma eta_c)*
B(eta_c-->pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)= (2.59+-0.32+-0.48)X10^{-4}. The upper
limit for eta_c-->phi pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^- is also obtained as B(J/\psi-->gamma
eta_c)*B(eta_c--> phi pi^+pi^-pi^+pi^-)< 6.03 X10^{-5} at the 90% confidence
level.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

A lipidomic approach to identify cold-induced changes in Arabidopsis membrane lipid composition
Lipidomic analysis using electrospray ionization triple quadrupole mass spectrometry can be employed to monitor lipid changes that occur during cold and freezing stress of plants. Here we describe the analysis of Arabidopsis thaliana polar glycerolipids with normal and oxidized acyl chains, sampled during cold and freezing treatments. Mass spectral data are processed using the online capabilities of LipidomeDB Data Calculation Environment
Ottelia fengshanensis, a new bisexual species of Ottelia (Hydrocharitaceae) from southwestern China
Ottelia fengshanensis, a new species (Hydrocharitaceae) from southwest China is here described and illustrated. Comparing its morphological features to putative close relatives O. guanyangensis, it has 3-4 flowers (vs. 2-5) each spathe, hexagonal-cylindric fruit, white styles (vs. yellow), green leaves (vs. dark green) and fruit tiny winged (vs. winged obviously). Molecular phylogenetic investigation of four DNA sequences (ITS, rbcL, trnK5' intron and irnS-irnG) and the Poisson Tree Processes model for species delimitation (PTP) analysis, further resolves O. fengshanensis as a new species that is close to O. guanyangensis with distinct support
Understanding public speakers’ performance: first contributions to support a computational approach
Communication is part of our everyday life and our ability to communicate can have a significant role in a variety of contexts in our personal, academic, and professional lives. For long, the characterization of what is a good communicator has been subject to research and debate by several areas, particularly in Education, with a focus on improving the performance of teachers. In this context, the literature suggests that the ability to communicate is not only defined by the verbal component, but also by a plethora of non-verbal contributions providing redundant or complementary information, and, sometimes, being the message itself. However, even though we can recognize a good or bad communicator, objectively, little is known about what aspects – and to what extent—define the quality of a presentation. The goal of this work is to create the grounds to support the study of the defining characteristics of a good communicator in a more systematic and objective form. To this end, we conceptualize and provide a first prototype for a computational approach to characterize the different elements that are involved in communication, from audiovisual data, illustrating the outcomes and applicability of the proposed methods on a video database of public speakers.publishe
A facile chemical conversion synthesis of Sb2S3 nanotubes and the visible light-driven photocatalytic activities
We report a simple chemical conversion and cation exchange technique to realize the synthesis of Sb2S3 nanotubes at a low temperature of 90°C. The successful chemical conversion from ZnS nanotubes to Sb2S3 ones benefits from the large difference in solubility between ZnS and Sb2S3. The as-grown Sb2S3 nanotubes have been transformed from a weak crystallization to a polycrystalline structure via successive annealing. In addition to the detailed structural, morphological, and optical investigation of the yielded Sb2S3 nanotubes before and after annealing, we have shown high photocatalytic activities of Sb2S3 nanotubes for methyl orange degradation under visible light irradiation. This approach offers an effective control of the composition and structure of Sb2S3 nanomaterials, facilitates the production at a relatively low reaction temperature without the need of organics, templates, or crystal seeds, and can be extended to the synthesis of hollow structures with various compositions and shapes for unique properties
